Selecting Research Subjects
1.
The population that will serve in the study are the individuals that are attending substance
abuse counseling. These individuals have been identified as hung the problem of driving under
the influence and are susceptible to being arrested for DUI again. In this case, they will be
effective in helping carry out the study since they have been faced with the problem at hand.
Additionally, members of an Alcohol Anonymous group will also serve as subjects. This sample
population is going to be used for the study since they are the ones that have been affected by
substance abuse and thus the best test subjects of acquiring substantial results.
2.
The sampling method that will be used to select the participants is snowball sampling.
Since the study population has already been identified, the participants will be chosen from this
group. This sampling method makes sense since it is commonly used in social sciences when
investigating hard to reach groups. Existing subjects are asked to nominate further subjects
known to them, so the sample increases in size like a rolling snowball.
4.
Questionnaires will be used for the purpose of acquiring information regarding the study.
The reason why questionnaires are the best instrument for conducting the study is that the topic
being discussed is sensitive; thus, the participants would not want their identity revealed. The
anonymity of questionnaires will create an environment where the participants will be at ease to
provide essential information that would have otherwise not been revealed (Shoesmith, 2015).
Additionally, the subjects will have the freedom to provide any answer they want since their

identity will not be revealed. Under such circumstances, the information acquired is mostly
truthful and thus increasing the chances of the success of the research.
5.
The study will take place in the suburban or rural environment, since this is where most
of those undergoing counseling regarding driving under the influence can be found. Additionally,
the Alcohol Anonymous group can only be found in this suburban setting since this is where they
are based.
6.
The questionnaires will be given to each of the participants as well as enough time to
complete them. The open-ended nature of the questions in the questionnaire will also enable
them to express themselves as they wish.
7.
Approval will be required from the study site location particularly from the counseling
group that is scheduled to attend counseling on the weekends. However, the importance of the
research as well as what it hopes to achieve will be enough to coerce the owners of the center to
allow us to conduct the research.

HOW EFFECTIVE ARE DUI IN CAR DEVICES

This research focuses on driving under the influence of either an illegal substance or
alcohol. The research design selected is quantitative survey strategy of inquiry. The researcher
will distribute questionnaires (survey research) to collect the data.
Participation will be voluntary, anyone willing to participate will be issued a
questionnaire. The researcher’s study population are individuals attending substance abuse
counseling, those people who are required to have the DUI device in their car, and also members
of an Alcohol Anonymous group. The researcher will ask participants to complete a
questionnaire asking closed-ended yes or no type questions.
Appropriate research design and data collection
Questionnaires are the most appropriate for this research because of the topic is on the
sensitive issue and participants are less likely to want their identities revealed. Questionnaires
offer privacy. The results from this study may provide information on whether the in-car DUI
devices are effective in reducing the number of repeat offenders.
Groups That Will Benefit from Research
As a result of the research on the effectiveness of DIU on the car devices, the group that
will first benefit with this research are the passengers. This is because the drivers will not be
driving the vehicles while they are drunk, as they will understand the effects, therefore, the
passengers will be guaranteed safety.

Problem Statement
Ignition interlock devices are used to connote the tools that are embraced in the car devices
to curb or prevent an individual from operating when the device detects alcohol on the breath of
an individual. These devices are primarily installed in cars or vehicles of individuals convicted of
DUI. All of the states within the US have implemented rules and regulations requiring judges and
the authorized personnel to incept the ignition interlock devices on the vehicles that are operated
by particular drunk driving offenders (Bishop et al., 2017).
Drinking and driving is defined as driving under the influence operating vehicles while
intoxicated with alcohol, and it entails operating of a car or a vehicle when the content of alcohol
in the blood is high (Downs, Shults and West, 2017). Driving under the influence of alcohol may
lead to harmful and fatal situations. Despite the fact that some drivers fail to indicate the signs of
being under the influence of alcohol, it is imperative to point out that any drinking and driving is
considered to be illegal and it is punishable by law.
Research studies have revealed that individuals who have a challenge with alcohol use are
often disorderly and the people who binge drink are at a higher risk of drinking and driving
(Downs, Shults and West, 2017). This postulation implies individuals consuming large amounts
of alcohol often result in harmful side effects resulting from mass consumption. The presence of
alcohol in the blood can affect the driving abilities of an individual.
Therefore, it is imperative to carry out alcohol detection and devices on the drivers to
determine the alcohol amounts in the blood. Additionally, it is vital to explore the role of the DUI
devices in-car devices and their effectiveness in reducing repeat offenders.

Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of the study is to explore the effectiveness of the DUI in the car
devices. The study will also explore the components of DUI device that aid the device in
reducing repeat offenders. Various research studies have postulated that the interlocks reduce the
chance of the drug impaired drivers or the individuals with a high amount of alcohol content in
the blood from reoffending (Shulman-Laniel et al., 2017). Previous interlock studies have
revealed that criminals who get the interlocks or the DUI devices have a limited chance or
likelihood of being condemned of DUI charges.
Furthermore, research conducted in Mexico found out that the drivers who engaged
themselves in the interlock program reduced the act of recidivism by 50%. The current study
aims to carry out an in-depth exploration on the effectiveness of the DUI devices in cars and the
components that aid the DUI devices in reducing repeat offenders. The study also aims to
examine the effect of the DUI device in reducing repeat offenders.
Research Questions
How efficient are the DUI in car devices?
What is the impact of the DUI device in reducing repeat offenders?
Sub Problems
Drinking and driving has an impact on the passengers since they can be adversely
affected following the occurrence of an accident (Sylvester and Haider-Markel, 2016). The DUI
devices functions by ascertaining the amount of alcohol in the blood. Therefore, it is essential to

expound on the role of the DUI devices in aiding the drivers to curtail the occurrence of
accidents.
