Data Analysis and Management
Analyze a provided data file for a scenario and write a 2–4 page management report detailing
your findings and recommendations based on the results.
Note: The assessments in this course build upon each other, so you are strongly encouraged to
complete them in sequence.
To complete this assessment, use data analysis software and the Campus Crime Data Excel file,
linked in the Resources under the Required Resources heading. The Excel file contains two data
sheets:
1. The Campus Crime Data for Minnesota (2009–2011) page provides actual data generated
by the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis
Cutting Tool.
2. The Campus Crime Data Codebook explains the labels used in the Campus Crime Data
sheet.
Practical Application Scenario
As a result of recent campus safety concerns at Capella University, you have been engaged by
campus security team leaders to gather and analyze data about on-campus crime rates in schools
in the state of Minnesota. Crime data from 181 Minnesota campuses has been compiled in the
Campus Crime Data file.
Write a management report for campus security team leaders analyzing and evaluating campus
crime data for Minnesota. Include your findings and recommendations for your clients. In your
report, be sure to examine the following:
1. Identify what crimes were most commonly committed on Minnesota campuses between
2009 and 2011. Based on the data, would you say the crime rates decreased or increased
from 2009 to 2011?
2. The campus security leaders believe that the total crime rate in public institutions is more
than that in private institutions. They have asked you to test that hypothesis. Describe
your results.
3. Your clients would also like you to develop a 95 percent confidence interval for the
difference in total campus crime rates between public and private institutions in
Minnesota. Report your results.
4. Analyze what ethical issues, if any, should concern you in conducting your research.
Additional Requirements
Compile your work and report in a 2–4 page Word document.
Include whatever relevant tables and graphics you need to support your findings. Place your
tables and graphics within the text and be sure to clearly title them. Your tables and graphics
must be legible and suitable for inclusion in a management report.

CONFIDENCE INTERVAL CALCULATOR (last updated 24 March 2011)
This spreadsheet can be used to calculate confidence intervals for a mean, the difference betweeen two means,
a proportion or odds, comparisons of two proportions (the absolute risk reduction, number needed to treat,
relative risk, relative risk reduction and odds ratio), sensitivity, specificity and two-level likelihood ratios.
To use the calculator, click on the tabs at the bottom of this screen to choose the appropriate worksheet. Enter
the required data. The result will be returned under the Result heading. Note that the cells in the Results section
contain formulas, even though these cells initially appear blank. Be careful not to delete or overwrite the formulas
The confidence interval for the difference between two means uses the method that assumes equal variances for
the two populations (see Armitage P and Berry G (1994): Statistical Methods in Medical Research (3rd ed.).
London: Blackwell, pp 108-109).
The method used to calculate a confidence interval for a proportion is the Wilson score method without continuity
correction (see Newcombe RG (1998). Two-sided confidence intervals for the single proportion: Comparison of
seven methods. Statistics in Medicine , 17, 857-872).
The confidence limits for the odds were obtained by taking the confidence limits for the proportion and converting
those proportions into odds.
The method used to calculate a confidence interval for the difference between two proportions is the NewcombeWilson method without continuity correction (see Newcombe RG (1998). Interval estimation for the difference
between independent proportions: Comparison of eleven methods. Statistics in Medicine, 17, 873-890). The
confidence limits for the number needed to treat are the inverse of the limits for the absolute risk reduction.
Confidence intervals for the relative risk and odds ratios are calculated using the methods described by Armitage
and Berry (Armitage P and Berry G (1994): Statistical Methods in Medical Research (3rd ed.). London: Blackwell,
p 131). The relative risk reduction and its confidence limits are 1 minus the relative risk and its confidence limits.
Confidence intervals for sensitivity and specificity are produced with the Wilson score method (see above for
reference). Confidence intervals for positive and negative likelihood ratios are calculated with the method
described by Simel and colleagues (Simel DL, Samsa GP, Matchar DB (1991). Likelihood ratios with confidence:
sample size estimation for diagnostic test studies. Journal of Clinical Epidemiology , 44, 763-70). The confidence
interval for the diagnostic odds ratio is calculated as described by Armitage and Berry (see above for reference).
The results have been checked against worked examples in the sources cited above. Nonetheless there may still
be errors. If you identify errors please contact the author, Rob Herbert, email: r.herbert@neura.edu.au.
