Literacy is defined as multiple social practice. Explain.
In class, we discussed the importance of involving students in their education by relating what
they have experienced in society to what they are learning in the classrooms. The definition of
literacy being a multiple social practice because if one student has an idea of what a word
means based off of their experiences and another student has a different definition based on
their experiences, neither student is wrong in their definition, they are just expressing their
knowledge of experience. This also helped us realize that there are different ways of involving
the students, whether it is drawing a picture or writing a paragraph, each strategy is another
way to get the students involved by using multiple tactics. It is also beneficial to the class if the
teacher encourages the students to share their different definitions/ experiences with one
another because it helps them realize different people have different thoughts because they
have different experiences.
“A Discourse is a socially accepted association among ways of using language, of thinking,
feeling, believing, valuing, and of acting that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a
socially meaningful group or “social network,” or to signal (that one is playing) a socially
meaningful “role.” (Gee, 1990, p. 143)”
