NCAT Field Trip

Lee Road 151, Opelika, AL 36804 Note: Test track is 20-min drive from main facility
Date & Time: (10 am – 3 pm), Thursday, April 5
Time toke to arrive to NCAT Main Facility, by car: (3-hour 20 min drive) one way.
The purpose is to visit the National Center for Asphalt Technology lab facility and test track.
NCAT Field Trip Loge;
-Upon arrival to NCAT Main Facility, we were greeted by (Michael Heitzman – Senior
Researcher) Who has prepared a brief presentation to introduce us to NCAT mission.
– Then we were accompanied by (Jason Moore – Lab Manager) though NCAT Laboratory where
showed us

Demonstration of binder testing procedures
Aggregate tests associated with Superpave
Volumetric mix design using the Superpave gyratory compactor
Moisture susceptibility testing
Rut testing with Asphalt Pavement Analyzer and Hamburg Wheel Tracker
And many more
-Around 12 noon, our teacher took us to lunch, (it was good).
-After lunch, we drove to NCAT’s Test Track where we were met by (Jason Nelson – Test Track
Manager). He took us on a brief tour of the Laboratory suction there and then took us out to see
the heavily loaded tractor-trailers that are weighted by many metal plate to simulate and expedite
long-term traffic effects on the Test Track many different asphalt mix design sections (The test
track consists of 46 different 200-ft test sections that are sponsored on three-year cycles. Sections
can be classified as either surface mix performance sections or structural sections).
Unfortunately, the test track was not running during our visit to NCAT on April 5, and we did
not see the heavily loaded tractor-trailers in action.
