For the research project, I will focus on the Teaching English as a Second language
(TESOL)teacher training program in MSU ELC center for people outside the U.S. This is
a special program in English Learning Center in Michigan State University usually
design for people outside the U.S. They will design the English language courses and
TESOL lessons based on their needs. The people from other countries will come to the
campus to study the lessons for two months or one semester. In this research project, I
want to focus on two groups of people receive the training program this semester. They
are from Panama and Brazil. They are all teachers in their countries and they came to the
campus for extra training of English language and TESOL skills.
In this research project, I want to explore three questions. Firstly, what English and
TESOL skills plan to teach in this program in a short period time which could fit with
their needs. What specific topics will include in the training? For this semester, Panama
and Brazil teachers have their own group learning TESOL class in the afternoon.
However, the Panama teacher will have English lesson which divided into Listening,
Reading, Writing and Speaking topics depending on their levels in the morning. They will
have these lessons with the regular ESL students. However, Brazil group’s English
classes do not work with regular students. They have their own lessons. Therefore, I want
explore the curriculum design for this training program.
Secondly, how to teach these ideas and skills in the training? What difference
between this training program with regular ESL class? As I heard from my friend, I knew
these teachers are all English teachers and they have taught English for several years.
This training program will be extra training for their professional development.
Therefore, I want to know what specific skills they want to gain and how this program
could bring supports.
Finally, what outcomes or purposes do this training program want to bring to these
teachers and how to make sure whether this short-term training will bring long term
achievement for their future teaching in their countries? Panama training program has
worked several years, they will send group of teachers to the campus every year. I want to
explore the goal of this training and whether it bring help to the education in Panama.
Based on these three questions, I plan to meet the supervisor of this program and the
teachers who is teaching these groups of people this semester. For the supervisor, I want
to gain more detail information of this program. The program introduction on the website
does not clearly determine whether this program is workforce or not. And it is not just
design for teacher. There was also group of people from business company just wanted to
practice English. Therefore, I want to know more details about these teacher training
programs. For course teachers, I want to explore the curriculum design question whether
they continue improve the curriculum based on the feedback collections and teaching
experience every year.

1. What is the process of this training program? How to decide the curriculum and
divide the levels? How to make sure the lesson will fit with their needs?
2. What is the purposes of this training program? What specific goals of both English
and TESOL lessons?
3. What difference between training program lessons and regular English lessons?

they will have to teach other teachers in their own countries?
5. Why the class setup different from Panama and Brazil? (Panama will study with
regular ESL learners)
6. Whether there have feedback collections from teachers when they finish the program?
Whether there will receive feedback from teachers who went back to countries? How
does this training program work for future teaching?
