Philosophy of K-12 Education
This essay is aimed to analyze and evaluate the history and politics of K-12 education and
to compare this philosophy to the ISLLC standards. Generally, K-12 education is a public
compulsory educational system in Europe, United States and Canada that involves both public
and private institutions. Its aim is to prepare children and adults for the future personal and
professional life in the society. Each country has own national and regional quality standards and
requirements in relation to education. One of the most reputable and known educational
standards is ISLLC (The Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium) – the set of rules and
requirements, developed by National Policy Board on Educational Administration and the
Council of Chief State School Officers in order to improve school leadership preparation
programs. The main ISLLC educational standards were created for the following purposes:
 promotion of students’ success by facilitating development, sustaining, nurturing and
advocating instructional program and school culture;
 ensuring management of resources, operations and organizations for effective and safe,
learning environment;
 promotion of student’s success by acting with ethical manner, fairness, integrity and
understanding for influencing the larger cultural, legal, economic, social and political
contexts.
Following the above mentioned educational standards (as well as other ones) is important,
as they ensure that the educational system of the country corresponds to at least minimum norms
and requirements. At the same time, it is very important to have the up-to-date educational
standards, as the life and knowledge of people 100 years ago and today is different, so norms
should be different too.

Generally, leadership philosophy (as a set of principles and beliefs in education) strongly
influences how people interpret reality and guides their understanding of the world’s functioning.
The human’s understanding, and interpretation of leadership affect how they react to situations,
events and people around. In other words, how people think determines how they behave.
My educational philosophy is based on the following principles: focus on qualitative
instruction and students’ achievements, positive instructional climate, productive relationships
with pupils, professional development, effective resource allocation, involvement in the
community, as well as promotion of leadership and governance.
From the point of view of a leader, I think that the responsibility of educator is to teach
student how to learn, how to analyze and evaluate information properly and how to use the
materials in the most efficient way. This skill will be useful for all the future life of a student as
each day the human faces a range of challenges and problems, so people need to know how to
deal with them and how to find the possible ways out. From the point of view of the leader, I
think that the goal of instructor is to satisfy the inner sense of wonder and curiosity that every
child or teenager has. In other words, the role of instructor in the educational process is to
encourage and promote students’ desire to learn and to orient human energy for personally and
socially productive purposes. In these conditions, school leaders must use the time for instruction
effectively and try to avoid and eliminate unnecessary distractions. Educators should encourage
open dialogue and improve students’ achievements so that they at least correspond to the state
standards. According to my point of view, education is a shared responsibility that involves
teachers, parents, students and community, so in order to achieve the best results, all the parties,
involved in educational process should work hard to be successful. Also, it is important to state
that education is dynamic process, influenced by numerous economic, political and social factors,

so no wonder that each day new opportunities and new problems appear. Education must
constantly develop to correspond to the constantly changing requirements of professional job
market. Finally, from the perspective of a leader, I think that one of the most important factors
influencing the quality of K-12 education is the personality and professionalism of teachers. The
communicative skills of educators, such as: listening skills, the ability to empower others, to
understand non – verbal and verbal communications, as well as having directive and supportive
mindset contribute greatly to the efficient and productive learning and provide security and
comfort to group members.
From the perspective of a follower, I believe that education is everywhere, not only in
kindergartens, schools and universities. Motivated people can study from their environment,
Internet, books, TV, relatives, friends, colleagues and neighbors. My personal experience of
compulsory K-12 education demonstrated that both the learning and teaching processes are far
away from perfect. In the childhood, the importance of education is often neglected, as students
usually do not really understand that whole their future life will depend from the quality of
education they obtain. The curriculum is also often a problem, as it should be more student driven and to adapt to the needs and requirements of each single individual, no matter how
complicated this task is. Another problem of K-12 education from the perspective of a follower is
the evaluation of students. Of course, some evaluation system should exist, in order to create
competitive atmosphere and to promote student’s desire to learn. However, students should
understand that they are learning not for satisfying the teacher and not for obtaining good grades,
but for getting the necessary personal and professional skills that may be useful in their future
life. In other words, on each single lesson, students should see that their knowledge is not just

useless theoretical information, but important practical material that will be helpful in their
further career.
Educational trends are constantly changing and technology is getting more and more
integrated in educational process all over the world. In these conditions, I think that in the
forthcoming decades the role and utilization of laptops, tablets and other technologies will
greatly increase. Internet has already changed the way education works, as people do not need to
spend a lot of time to go to the library, to search the necessary information, and to memorize it,
as the needed materials are easily available and accessible through several clicks. In other words,
the future of K-12 education will be technologically – oriented and Internet – driven: a lot of new
equipment will be utilized, such as virtual reality, universal translators, brain imaging, artificial
intelligence, among numerous others.
Finally, it is important to state that globalization, integration, technological developments,
innovations
and other significant factors constantly contribute to the transformation of
educational processes, so obviously schools nowadays are totally different from the ones of the
past. The future of K-12 education will greatly depend on professionalism of people and their
ability to meet the quality standards and raising challenges of the 21-st century.
