Marine project part 3–Identifying “Targets” for the Letter of Appeal

Marine plastic pollution is prevalent in the Pacific Ocean. The pollution is devastation to the
surrounding environment. More so, marine plastic pollution affects marine lives of big and small
species including fish and whales among others. The south pacific garbage patch, found between
east of Austria and South America is an example of plastics marine pollution. Based on the
insight that plastics are consumed on a daily basis, with an annual scale of 300 tons of plastic and
its products, the effects are becoming a threat to human, animal, and plants altogether. Therefore,
in order to secure our coastlines along Pacific and other oceans, strategizing on policies that
highly reduce marine plastic pollution is imperative. These policies and efforts should be geared
towards banning plastic disposal to the sea and oceans, cleaning the already disposed plastics and
creating awareness to the public about the importance of keeping seas and oceans out of plastic
pollution. Hence, the following individual targets can assist in the formulation, implementation
and enforcing laws and strategies that pertain marine protection from plastic pollution.
Scott Pruitt
He is currently the administrator or director of EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) of the
United States. Scott assumed this office on February 17, 2017, from Catherine McCabe. The
agency is a department in the ministry of environment of the federal government that purpose to
protect the human health as well as the environment through formulating and enforcing laws and
regulations that pertain environmental protection.
Hence, I believe Scott Pruitt is a best
individual target in dealing with the menace of plastic pollution in marine. The agency can

formulate laws that limit disposal of plastics by organizations. Typically, research indicates that
most plastics found in oceans and seas are disposed of by companies as waste products. As an
effort to protect marine lives, Scott Pruitt should implement regulations for plastic manufacturing
companies that limit the use of plastics if not banning the use of plastic completely.
James C. Fish Jr.
James is the current chief executive officer of Waste Management Company. Headquartered in
Houston, Texas, the company was founded in 1968 with a mission of managing American wastes
as well as providing environmental protection services including providing waste bins and
containers. The company CEO is best suited to eradicate or reduce plastic pollution in the pacific
and other seas and oceans. The CEO can use his position to enhance plastic collection from the
seas and oceans. Some of the policies that James can use include mobilizing resources to clean
the environment including cleaning the seas and oceans from plastic pollution.
Dr. Susan D. Shaw
She is an American ocean conservationist as well as environmental health scientist. Susan is also
founder and director of Marine & Environmental Research Institute. The institute purpose to
provide research information about the environmental protection more so on ocean protection.
The institute also provides suggestions and recommendations to the relevant authorities which
include cleaning oceans and seas through the collection of plastics and other pollutants. Hence,
Susan can use his position as a professor at New York University to recommend strategies to the
relevant government authorities. The institute can also develop an education program to the
public about the importance of environmental protection especially in protecting oceans from
plastic pollution.
