ANTH 208: Medical Anthropology
Applied Medical Anthropology Essay
For the Applied Medical Anthropology (AMA) Essay, students will research a current event and analyze it
(explain and propose solutions) based on their knowledge of medical anthropology. The AMA Essay is
worth 70 points.
Project Goals:
1. To encourage students to explore course content and find their relevance outside of the
classroom.
2. To encourage students to apply anthropological concepts to understanding issues of health and
healing.
3. To demonstrate an appropriate format for anthropological writing.
Project Details:
1. Topic:
You should pick a relevant current event or issue from within the last five years. Ideally, topic
will be a “problem” that has potential solutions. Topic should be related to health and healing,
as defined in this course. You might consider looking at headlines from reputable news sources.
2. Research (Context):
This project requires a small amount of research. Students should find three academic, peer
reviewed sources (journal articles or books) that relate, provide context, and help explain your
topic. All of these sources should be written by medical anthropologists and provide
ethnographic evidence that helps you make sense of your topic. You may consult, and should
cite, reputable web sites (such as WHO or CDC) but these will not count toward your sources.
You are not permitted to use Wikipedia or any other online encyclopedia or dictionary. See
Blackboard for help finding medical anthropology sources.
3. Analysis (Explain and Propose Solutions):
Your paper must include a section where you analyze your topic, explain it using medical
anthropology terms and course content, and propose solutions based on your knowledge of
medical anthropology. You should draw upon course content but also use research from the
literature you have read. Make sure to define your terms as you write.
4. Paper
Students will submit a finely written paper, the culmination of their project. Papers should be 45 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-pt font, 1 inch margins. You should include a title
page and a works cited page (these do not count toward your page totals). See below for paper
format. WORTH: 70 points. DUE: see syllabus.
AMA Essay Format:
1. INTRODUCTION: briefly introduce your topic, any general background, and briefly discuss how
you will analyze your topic and the solutions you will present. As with all introductions, you
should start with the most general background and move to the most specific: your specific
thesis sentence. The thesis sentence should include your specific topic and the main points (your
explanation and solutions) that you will address in more detail below. 1-2 paragraphs.
2. CONTEXT: describe your topic in detail (who, what, where, when). Use the research you have
done to provide background context, history, and similar or related events, issues, or problems.
This should be descriptive, not analytic (not the why component: that is the next section). About
1 page.
3. ANALYSIS: EXPLANATION: explain your topic using medical anthropology terms and concepts. In
other words, how would a medical anthropologist make sense of this? What is really going on?
What issues are not adequately addressed by the existing media reports and/or solutions.
1-1.5 pages.
4. ANALYSIS: SOLUTIONS: Using your knowledge of medical anthropology, propose 2-3 solutions to
your topic/problem. Provide clear details and justification on what needs to be done. When
appropriate, cite sources that propose similar solutions.
5. CONCLUSION: summarize your work. Provide any additional information or questions that you
would have liked to answer, but couldn’t. 1-2 paragraphs.
6. DON’T FORGET: to provide a TITLE PAGE and a WORKS CITED PAGE. In-text citations should
follow a Chicago-style, parenthetical (author-date) format. See Blackboard CITATIONS AND
HONOR CODE.
General Essay Format:
1. Writing should use correct and appropriate spelling and grammar.
2. Paragraphs should not have a space between them, but the first line should be indented.
3. Paragraphs should be organized topically. All sentences should relate to the topic of each
paragraph.
4. Limit your use of the first person. Occasionally using “I” or “me” is fine, but you should avoid
consistent use of phrases like “I think” or “in my opinion.” As the paper’s author, I know you
that you think what you are writing.
5. Make sure to incorporate an anthropological perspective. Your approach, interpretation, and
explanation should not be ethnocentric. You should try to understand the problem from the
perspective of the community in which it takes place.
