Reflective Essay (750 Words min.)
Directions: Consider the elements of professionalism, social awareness, and civic
responsibility in the context of your prior life experiences, course work, and the bronze
level module you just reviewed and answer the following four questions.
1.What is one of the best examples of professionalism you have ever witnessed and why did it
make such an impression?
2.Describe an event or an activity that you participated in which you demonstrated social
awareness. How did participating in this event or activity make you feel?
3.What does citizenship mean to you, not only as a citizen of a state, community, country or
campus, but also as a citizen of the world?
4.Do you plan to look for experiential learning opportunities to expand knowledge, skills, and
abilities in the areas of professionalism, civic responsibility, and social awareness? If so, how
would you want to build upon your knowledge, skills and abilities? If not, what would you like
to see in future Experiential Learning opportunities that would change your mind?
What is Experiential Learning@MGA?
• Experiential Learning@MGA is the name of Middle Georgia
State University’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).
• Middle Georgia State University’s Experiential Learning@MGA
initiative provides opportunities for students to engage in
experiential learning (EL) – formal, guided, and authentic
experiences outside the classroom which:
– improve the students’ knowledge of the subject matter, and
increase their ability to apply their learning in new
situations,
– promote the development of new and practical skill sets,
– and create an atmosphere of learning as students share
their experiences with other students in their fields of
study.
What is a Quality Enhancement
Plan (QEP)?
• A QEP is part of a college or university’s reaffirmation process (the
process by which the university’s accreditation is reviewed and
approved on a regular basis). The QEP is a carefully-formulated plan
of action created to address a well-defined topic or issue(s) related to
enhancing student learning. Middle Georgia State’s plan, developed
by the University’s faculty, staff, students, and community partners,
complements the institution’s ongoing strategic planning, academic
planning, and evaluation process.
• The Office of Experiential Learning@MGA (OEL) promotes and
supports the philosophy of:
“Exploration and Application
Beyond the Classroom”
▪ Experiential Learning@MGA positions the institution for
transformational change by enhancing and supporting student learning
and engagement through an array of experiential learning (EL)
opportunities, specifically, Internships, Undergraduate Research,
Service Learning.

partners in experiential learning?
More details about the Silver, Gold,
and Platinum Levels…
• The specific course related opportunities (known as EL Pathways)
are unique to majors, departments, or schools and are
coordinated by academic department based experiential learning
liaisons.
• EL Liaisons- representing each academic unit, will oversee,
coordinate, and assist with the creation, promotion, and
assessment of experiential learning in their area during the
academic year.
What is expected of students at the
end of an Experiential Learning
opportunity?
• At the conclusion of a Experiential Learning@MGA objective students
will be able to:
– explain the values and behaviors of professionalism, social awareness,
and civic responsibility as the foundation for experiential learning
– use academic knowledge in professional, real-world contexts to
prepare them for their chosen career field.
– critically analyze, evaluate, and test academic knowledge in
professional, real-world contexts.
• Future EL opportunities at the Silver and Gold levels will require
students to complete a reflection assignment, supervisor
evaluation, and self evaluation related to their specific experiential
activity.
How will student participation in
Experiential Learning@MGA activities be
recognized?
•
Student participation will be recognized in the
following three ways during your college experience:
– an opportunity to take part in an annual
Undergraduate Showcase, where Middle Georgia
State students will present research, share
experiences, and challenge their peers to
consider new points of view and new ways of
thinking.
– an electronic Experiential Learning transcript will
archive the individual courses, activities, and
projects students participate in and be available
for several years after graduation to highlight
your accomplishments.
– Completion of either the Silver or Gold level will
be part of each student’s academic record and
acknowledged as a distinctive accomplishment at
graduation

Other Frequently Asked Questions?
• If I change my major, do my achievement levels reset?
– No. All of your EL experiences will count towards your Bronze,
Silver, Gold, or Platinum award, even if you change majors.
• Will this affect my overall cost of my MGA education?
– Not usually. Students will have the opportunity to participate in
many different EL opportunities, most of which will incur no
additional cost.
• Will this affect my time to graduation?
– No. The opportunity to participate in experiential learning
opportunities will not add credit hours to your degree
requirements. Additionally, there should be no effect on your
time to graduate, depending on class availability and pathways
chosen.

SLO #(1)
Professionalism…what is it?
•
Professionalism…
able, ace, acknowledged, adept, competent, crackerjack, efficient,
experienced, expert, finished, knowing one’s stuff, known, learned, licensed,
on the ball, polished, practiced, proficient, qualified, sharp, skillful, slick, there,
up to speed, well-qualified
– (Thank you, Thesaurus.com, for this great list of synonyms:
http://thesaurus.com/browse/professional?s=t… but isn’t it more than
that….???)
– As you take various courses and internships within your major, you will
develop a sense of what your profession expects. Courses in English,
Communications, Business, Education, and others will expose you to the
norms of different professional environments.
Continued …
• According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary professionalism is “the
conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a
professional person”. It encompasses various values and behaviors
which include ethics, reliability, dependability, the ability to work with
others, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
While there are
dozens and
dozens of
models, one
simple way to
think
professionalism
is through this
relationship
framework:
Appearance
Professionalism
Communication
Behavior
Appearance…
•
•
•
Presenting a professional appearance is important not only during
the job-seeking and interview process — it’s something that should
be carried over into your everyday life as a career professional.
Every setting has an appropriate wardrobe, regardless of whether
it’s scrubs, a suit, or business casual.
The way you dress is a reflection of how you view your work and
how others see you and your company. Always erring on the side
established norms will ensure that you always project the
appropriate image.
– Note: When dressing “professionally” present yourself –
• Clean
• Well groomed
• Free of Wrinkles
• Be comfortable but work ready
• Free of offensive/obscene materials. Avoid any clothing
with a picture or slogan other than ones approved by your
employer.
Let me ask you which of these groups of people
are more professional… This is a trick question because
being “professional” entails much more than looking the part…
Group 1
Group 2
Behavior… it’s what you’re doing
1.
Reliability. Excellent attendance, punctuality, trustworthiness, follow through,
commitment, initiative, following instructions, adherence to schedule, respecting
confidentiality.
2. Cooperation. Effective teamwork, understanding one’s roles and responsibilities as a
team member.
3. Attentiveness. Mindfulness of safety, quality, and productivity.
4. Honesty. Truthfulness in all situations.
5. Respect for others. Courtesy, attentive listening, appropriate language, appreciation
for diversity.
6. Ambition. Hard working, self-disciplined, self-motivated.
7. Responsibility.
8. Fairness.
9. Flexibility.
10. Willingness to serve and a positive, friendly attitude.
Communication…it’s much more
than what you’re saying…
•
Effective communication is recognized as crucial to enhance
performance, both personally and professionally. Communication
involves the whole range of ways in which people pass information or
messages back and forwards in non-verbal, verbal and written formats.
It includes the information they give and receive, how people make
meaning of this information and how they use it.
•
Individuals most likely to be promoted and succeed have something in
common: they communicate effectively. They listen actively, express
ideas clearly, speak confidently and authentically, and write effectively.
•
Strengthening your communication skills enhances your professionalism,
personal presence, and potential for advancement. No matter what your
level, there is always opportunity to refine skills and increase impact.
What is effective, professional communication?
•
•
To be effective is to produce the desired result. Thus, in terms of
communication, effective means that the message intended to be sent by
one person is indeed the same message received by another person.
To be professional is to behave appropriately (with courtesy and respect)
and competently (using proper methods and vocabulary). Communication
can be professional, yet ineffective. You can speak courteously, but your
ideas can be unclear: “Please send me the thing.” Communication can
also be effective, but unprofessional. For example, you can confer the
thought that something is agreeable by saying: “that’s cool, dude.”
•
As you continue in your academic career and even into your future professional career
be mindful that you will learn more and more about components and considerations of
professional communication, such as …
– Audience, Purpose, Topic, and Occasion
– Communication Mechanisms
• WRITTEN COMMUNICATION – electronic correspondence, memoranda, letters,
reports, and papers
• ORAL COMMUNICATION – telephone conversations, interviews, and
presentations
• GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION – tables, graphs, maps, and images
• AND much, much more…
Take heed…
• Whether you’re tweeting, snapchatting, or leading a meeting,
how (and what) you communicate is important.
– DO be timely.
– DON’T be offensive.
– DO be aware of who is hearing/reading what you’re communicating.
• My suggestion: Don’t communicate anything you don’t want your
grandmother to hear, read, or see (and remember potential employers
and their investigators can AND do use
google too).
SLO (#2)
Social Awareness…What is it?
• Social awareness is the ability to understand and effectively interact
with people with different backgrounds and from different cultures.
• Developing social awareness involves learning about the dynamics of
social relationships between individuals, groups and communities.
• Social awareness spans a wide spectrum, beginning with social skills
development in early childhood and encompassing the level of social
consciousness that leads to social activism and societal transformation.
• Note: classes like Foreign Languages, Sociology, Psychology, History,
Literature, and many more can help you build social awareness by
encouraging you to see situations through the eyes of others.
7 Strategies to Develop
Social Awareness
• Social awareness spans a wide
spectrum, beginning with social
skills development in early
childhood and encompassing the
level of social consciousness that
leads to social activism and
societal transformation.
• Here are some strategies for
developing social awareness:
1- Consider the needs of
individuals and groups
2- Examine your role in conflicts
•
The use of excessive force,
intimidation, and aggression are
common strategies when dealing
with conflict. Some people avoid
conflicts at all costs. Others choose
the company of passive people or
engage in passive-aggressive
behaviors. Consider the role that
you play in perpetuating conflicts
and commit to living a more
socially harmonious life.
•
•
Focus on commonalities and
points of agreement to reduce
conflict. An overemphasis on
social differences can lead to
disharmony. Find the
commonalities. For children,
this may mean choosing a
game that both children enjoy.
Develop conflict resolution
skills. Take a course in conflict
resolution or spend time
talking to and observing the
behaviors of leaders and
mentors who are known for
their harmonious natures.
3- Educate yourself on social issues
• Racism, education inequality,
incarceration rates, human
trafficking, gun violence,
healthcare access, and poverty
are just a few examples of issues
plaguing society.
4- Step out of your comfort zone
to experience the unfamiliar
Whether you venture out to a
different side of town or travel to a
different country, exposing yourself to
diverse cultures and ways of life will
expand your thinking and view of the
world. Being exposed to different
belief systems, cuisines and lifestyles
is useful for expanding your social
circle and building tolerance for
diverse viewpoints.
5-Practice compassion
• Social transformation
requires a commitment to
exploring and understanding
divergent viewpoints.
• Develop empathy by
consciously imagining
yourself in the position of
those in a different or less
fortunate situation
6- Commit to a social awareness plan
•
•
•
•
Slipping into apathy and isolation
can be easy given life’s sometimes
overwhelming demands. Design a
plan that keeps you socially aware.
Serve in your community. Explore
service opportunities in schools,
cultural centers, political
organizations, religious
communities, or neighborhood
activities.
Engage in a social activity on a daily
basis. Choose an activity that
requires you to listen to and tend
to the needs of another person or
group.
Practice speaking up in defense of
others. Commit to voicing your
opinion on behalf of marginalized
groups who are deprived of their
basic human rights.
7- Ask other people to support your
efforts to become more socially
aware.
When friends, family and
colleagues realize that you want
to become more socially
engaged, they are more likely to
invite you to volunteer at an
event and join them in social
activities regularly.
