1. Cause and Cost of Employee Burnout
Employee burnout is prevalent in the workplace. It is a problem that every busy professional
encounter and should be addressed in every organization. Employee burnout is now considered a
crisis in the American workforce. A nationwide study conducted by Kronos Incorporated in the
Employee Engagement Series, 95 percent of the 614 Human resources leaders agreed that
employee burnout had impacted their organizations. It was identified that “unfair compensation
(41 percent), unreasonable workload (32 percent), and too much overtime / after-hours work (32
percent) are the top three contributors to burnout; talent management, employee development,
and leadership that should be in their control, including poor management (30 percent), employees
seeing no clear connection of their role to corporate strategy (29 percent), and a negative workplace
culture (26 percent) are also key burnout factors; and insufficient technology for employees to do
their jobs was identified by 20 percent of HR leaders as another primary cause of burnout”
(Gouthro, 2017).
According to Maslach et al. (1996), staff burnout is a condition of emotional exhaustion (feeling
emotionally drained and exhausted by one’s work), depersonalization (negative or very detached
feelings toward clients or patients), and reduced personal accomplishment (evaluating oneself
negatively and feeling unsatisfied with positive job performance and achievements). Work-related
stress is the leading workplace health problem and a major occupational health risk (CDC, 2017).
Employees exposed to stress and burnout can lead to a more serious problem that will affect the
organization like low productivity, low staff morale and worst, employee illnesses. Researchers
showed that “workplace stress caused additional expenditures of anywhere from $125 to $190
billion dollars a year” (Goh, 2015) in healthcare spending and can be far greater in costs of
business. With this high amount of costs associated to workplace burnout, leaders in the
organization need to do something to resolve this issue.
2. Purpose of the Investigation
Ask: What do you want to find out? What do you want to do?
Write in a clear and concise style: Develop a one to two paragraphs summary of the existing
opportunity and succinctly state the purpose or intent of the applied research investigation.
Example: As a result of a 45% growth in population from 2008 to 2012, and projections that
population growth will occur at a similar rate through 2006, demands for dental health services
are likely to increase in Big Rapids. According to xxxx (2011) technology and skilled human
resources affect productivity per unit of time in the dental industry that in turn impact the
profitability of companies in the industry. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation will be to
study the feasibility of creating a profitable dental management company for Big Rapids, MI.
3. Management/Business Questions
Ask: What is the over-riding question that the decision maker wants to know?
Example: Can a dental office management company in Big Rapids, MI become profitable within
24 months?
Ask: What are the specific question(s) that will be investigated in answer to the
Management/Business Question? (2 to 4 specific questions only).
Example: Research Q1: What is the supply, demand, and competitive environment?
Research Q2: What capital resources are needed and available in the first 2 years?
Research Q3: What human resources and technology are needed and available in the first 2
years?
Research Q4: What are the risks associated with this business opportunity?
Write in a clear and concise manner: Describe in a paragraph the essence of this sub-section to
give the reader the context of the information. The Management/Business Question and more
specific questions can remain in the listed form from this worksheet.
4. Intended Audience
The intended audience for this study is the whole organization itself, from the CEO,
management leaders, and most importantly its employees. The organization and its entire
workforce will benefit if the burnout will be prevented and addressed accordingly.
5. Summary of Section Highlights
Ask: What are the 3-5 major points I want to highlight from this section?
If a reader were to review only the Summary of Section Highlights, would the overall purpose of
this study be understood?
Write clearly and concisely: Develop one to two paragraphs to include the major points and an
introduction of the purpose of Section II.
