Sum-of-Products and Product-of-Sums Combinational Implementation
1. Objectives
1.1
1.2
1.3
1.4
Learn how to construct a Boolean equation from an English sentence.
Learn how to design combinational circuits using a minimal number of
gates.
Use NAND gates to implement the SOP (Sum-of-Products) form of an
output and NOR gates to implement the POS (Product-of-Sums) form of
the same output.
Verify that both the SOP and POS implementations yield the same output.
2. Problem Statement
2.1
2.2
2.3
A bank vault has three different keys (Think about what type of counter
will be needed). At least two keys are required to unlock the vault. Since a
failure in the locking mechanism would be very disruptive to banking
activities, the locking system will be constructed with redundancy. Both
the SOP and POS switching equations will be implemented to provide this
redundancy. Write the two switching equations which will cause the vault
to unlock. If any two of the three keys are inserted into their individual
locks and are turned to the unlock position, the vault will open. Let “0”
represent the locked condition for the individual keys and let “1”
represent the unlocked condition. Design and simulate a combinational
circuit for both the SOP with output F and POS with output G. The F or G
output must be “1” to open the vault.
Design and simulate combinational circuits that implement the SOP form
and the POS form using a minimal amount of AND, OR, and NOT gates. Use
whatever simplification techniques you are comfortable with.
Modify the designs by using only NAND gates to implement the SOP circuit
and NOR gates to implement the POS circuit. NOT gates are allowed.
Simulate the outputs of each to verify that they are correct.
3. Discussion
3.1
3.2
3.3
3.4
3.5
Did the output F (using AND-OR-NOT gates) equal the output G (using
AND-OR-NOT gates)? Why or why not?
Did the output F (using NAND gates) equal the output G (using NOR
gates)? Why or why not?
How many gates did each implementation require? Create a table in the
report and list in it how many gates of each type did each implementation
use.
Which implementation seems more efficient and why?
(Bonus): How could an inverter be created using a single NAND gate? A
single NOR gate?
4. Report
4.1
4.2
Include in the attachments the simplification process used to minimize the
number of gates required.
Include in the attachments all the circuit designs and simulations along
with the counter.
Laboratory Report Guidelines and Template
THESE GUIDELINES ARE VERY IMPORTANT
FOLLOW THEM!!!!!
Guidelines:
Use the attached template for your lab report. DO NOT INCLUDE THE GUIDELINE SECTION
(THIS FIRST PAGE) IN YOUR REPORT. Your report must have a title page as the first page and the
lab participation sheet at the end. Replace all italicized text in the template with the appropriate
information for your report. This includes the “#” in the lab and station numbers, i.e., “Lab 6: BCD to
Seven Segment LED Decoder” and not “Lab #6: BCD …”. Replace the date on the title page with the
date you completed the lab. Cut and paste all schematics and figures from all other applications into
your report document. All figures must include a figure number and a caption. Unless specifically
directed, do not submit OrCAD Capture project files with your report. If you have paper documents
that cannot be converted into electronic format for pasting into your report, then include the title of
these documents in the list of appendices and indicate they have been submitted as separate paper
documents.
Submit your lab report in a Microsoft Word document. Do not submit a pdf file for your report.
Upload to Blackboard and click the “Submit” button. Once you have uploaded your report you will not
be able to replace it with a “corrected” version unless it has been reset by the instructor. Make certain
your report is in final form before uploading. Note: there is a “Save” as well as a “Submit” button
available when you attach a file. The “Save” button will not submit your report, and it will not be
accessible to the instructors. Include the lab number and your name in the report file name. For
example, students Doe and Jones would name their file “Doe_Jones_Lab_8.docx” for Lab 8.
For additional information, see the course blackboard page for links to guidelines to scientific writing.
DO NOT INCLUDE THIS INFORMATION PAGE IN YOUR REPORT.

1. Objective
Write the problem statement in your own words. Give a brief introduction to the problem followed by the specifics of what is
asked. Be brief but not so brief to where there is uncertainty in what is to be done. Also explain why this is to be done. Avoid
using pronouns such as I and we when writing lab reports. DO NOT INCLUDE THESE ITALICIZED TEXT
INSTRUCTIONS IN YOUR REPORT.
2. Equipment
Hardware:
Software:
3. Procedure
How did you do it? Don’t copy the lab assignment’s procedure. Instead, give a summary of the steps you took to design and
implement what you created in lab. If you did anything not mentioned in the assignment, or did anything differently, mention
that. Write the procedure in paragraph form. DO NOT INCLUDE THESE ITALICIZED TEXT INSTRUCTIONS IN YOUR
REPORT.
4. Results/Conclusion
What happened? Did it work as expected? If not, why? If it did work, how could you make it better? What was the point of
this lab? (What is the significance of the results? ) DO NOT INCLUDE THESE ITALICIZED TEXT INSTRUCTIONS IN
YOUR REPORT.
5. Discussion Questions
