1. The lecture consisted of Dr. Bell giving a brief presentation about Martin Luther’s
views on the Jews, and the multilayered issues that this revealed in the 19th century.
He explained with full depth the historical dimensions to how Luther is perceived, his
maturing of theology, which in many ways undergoes multiple transitions, and the
general opposition that was perceived towards Jews. He covers on how the writings of
Luther expelled political impacts on society for Jewish persecution. I thought the
overall purpose of the lecture was to spread awareness on a topic that is sensible in
many contemporary ways and provoke diverse and intellectual thinking.
2. I was clueless about the historical background of the Holocaust, and how society in
many ways might have led to opposition against Jewish people, even in a
subconscious way. I found it interesting how many people, not just Luther, were
guilty of giving off a negative influence not only on society, but to the human species
as well.
3. He expelled political impacts on societies way of viewing Jews, which later on
might have escalated and further developed the movement of Jewish hatred. Since his
writings weren’t published until the 20th century there is speculation in whether or
not his publications immensely impacted society.

I went to the Congregation Beth AM reform synagogue at 2030 W fletcher ave,
tampa, fl 33612. The religion tied to this temple is reform Judaism. I went to a
service on Friday 20th 7:30 for evening shabbat.
1. The outside is a large one story building its rectangular. The inside is beautiful.
There is an arc in the front and center of the bima which is a jewish version of a
stage. It is decorated with a wooden tree carved in it. It has purple pews. There
are two podiums on the bima on either side. There is An Israeli flag next to an
American flag and gorgeous stained glass windows. You have someone at the
front door handing guest prayer programs and prayer books and greets each
guest saying shalom as soon as you walk in. The crows was mostly older white
people, many of them are from Israel.
2. The service is very upbeat and there are a lot of songs throughout the
ceremony, that heavily involves the audience. Most prayers are hopeful in tone
but they have one that holds the emotion of jewish guilt because of the
remembrance of all the suffering the hebrews went through in the past. One sad
events is the yitzkor service which is when they pray remembering the family
members of those in the congregation that have passed on. It is very emotional
and brings the group together as a huge religious family.
3. This temple is of reform judiasm so that means that they have replaced
traditional orthodox thought and teachings to a more modern view of the world.
I really like this because it shows how religion can keep its core values but be just
a progressive in thought as the society around them. The service was very open
and inviting. It did not cast down on any other class of people it was just a
forward eloquent practice. This religion believes in continuous revelation and
openness and acceptance. The main message is t be true to ones self and to
always give remembrance to those ancestors that went through many hardships
for us to be at the place of thought we are now. The worship is very formal
which I was surprised as because when I thought of reform Judaism I thought it
wouldn’t be that formal but it also was a very modern service because that is the
foundation of reform Judaism. The service was also very structured they had
time spaced out for every specific song or event it was very organized. You can
tell that this group is very close because they always take the time to give
remembrance for the people in the audience to morn over the lost of loved ones
so it shows a high level of respect and grievance as a big family. The religious
experience was very respectful and just super inviting you did not feel like a new
face in the pews they make everyone feel very welcomed.
