It is worth comparing the experience of natural
perspective to the more limited vision of space
which arises, for instance out of the application
of artificial or linear perspective. The rules of linear perspective limit the viewpoint to that of one
fixed eye. They are based on the notion that
objects of similar size appear to get smaller in
proportion the further away from the eye they
are. At the vanishing points (which also represent
infinity) the objects would be imperceptible. The
image is created as if drawn on a flat sheet of
window glass (the picture plan) set up between
the artist and the subject.
LINEAR
PERSPECTIVE
AND
ILLUSTRATION
The number of vanishing points, ie one, two or
three, depend on what is being depicted. Using
Illustrator you are to create a two point perspective drawing of the corner of the computer
lab. It must be the front wall and the cabinet
wall. The drawing must include the following
☛ Cabinets on one wall
☛ Computer desks in the center of the room
☛ Square or rectangle computers one each desk
(simplify them)
☛ A smart board on one wall with at least two
round projects on the board
☛ Realistic scale and proportions
☛ The ceiling lights of windows provides direct
downward light rays (shadows should appear on
the floor, gradations on forms)
☛ Composition must have definition, focus and
a full range of values
☛ Use a limited color palette to help define your
illustration
The final size will be 8.5 x 11 inches.
You will use a CMYK color palette.
SCHEDULE
☛ 10/5: Start your perspective grid and familiarize yourself with two point perspective.
☛ 10/12: Lab time for drawing.
