ENG 401A Annotated Bibliography
► The purpose of this assignment is to help you learn about the topic of your choice in preparation for your
final research project. Through the process of collecting, summarizing, and critically engaging with various source
texts, you will be able to formulate a thesis for your research paper that is persuasive and current. You should
consider this as one of the first building blocks of your final research project. Subsequent assignment (i.e., research
proposal) will each build upon the work that you do at this stage.
► What is an annotated bibliography?
A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic.
Bibliographies are sometimes called “References” or “Works Cited” depending on the style format you are using. A
bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).
An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or
evaluation of each of the sources. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or
more of the following.
•
Summarize: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main arguments? What is the
point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about,
what would you say? The length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is.
•
Assess: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it
compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or
objective? What is the goal of this source?
•
Reflect: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research.
Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source
in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?
► Searching for Sources
Choose 5 sources within your research group. You may select and discuss the sources together, but must write and
submit your bibliographies independently. When searching for sources to include, it is important to think about the
source’s relevance to your topic, and what role it could play in terms of situating your research. For example, you
may want to choose a classic, seminal piece of work in your interest area, a theory-oriented article, a couple of
empirical research articles, and a critical review related to your topic. Naturally, seminal research and/or theory
articles may be somewhat dated, but otherwise, it is best to make sure your source texts are current in order to
ensure your research is informed by the most up-to-date knowledge on the topic.
